What tools you will need to learn to sew|Beginner basics for sewing
Have you always wanted to learn to sew, but really didn’t know where to start? Would you like to learn the basics so you can tailor your clothes? Here are the basic tools to get started.
Equipment
- You will need a sewing machine, nothing fancy. The machine will need straight stitch, zigzag and a blind hem stitch. That’s it! You don’t need an expensive machine with embroidery.
- A good pair of scissors. I would suggest Fiskars 8″ length. Also, make sure other people in the family know that your scissors are for sewing 🙂 You would be amazed at how many times my little ones would use my scissors for cutting paper.
- Straight pins--I would suggest long , ball point, and with colored glass heads.
- Pin cushion– usually found by the pins in any fabric store. Something handy to put your hand needles in or extra pins.
- Dressmaker’s tape measure and I would suggest two sizes of rulers–a 12 inch ruler and a quilter’s ruler (it is clear and found in quilt supplies), that measures 6″ x 24″.
- Marking pencils-– If you can find a set of pencils with blue, pink and white, it helps. Different colors of fabric need different colors of marking pencils so you can see the marks.
- Thread–Make sure to buy a good quality thread. Cheap thread will cause all kinds of problems for a seamstress. I suggest either Gutermann or Coats & Clark XP. You will need Black, White, Off White, Medium Gray, Medium Brown, to start with.
- Bobbins–make sure you have an extra pack of bobbins for your sewing machine. It is great to have spares so you can have colors of thread ready to sew with.
- Hand Needles–The best needle to buy is one with a larger eye, so it is easier to thread. I buy #16 embroidery needles.
- Machine Needles–You will need two styles to begin to sew. I would buy Universal (which is a size 12) and Top Stitch (which is a size 14).
